If you ask this question of 15 different artists, you will get 15 different answers. Here is mine - an installation is any artwork that exists in it's current form only in the particular space it is exhibited in. For example, a painting is always the same anywhere you show it, but an installation changes from location to location because its arrangement is SITE SPECIFIC (E.S.D.O.M.L.I.T.Y.T.P.D.F.Y.P.P.) Certain installations can only exist in the space they were designed for (B.Y.O.D.).
Installation is an important medium in Contemporary Art. It allows for expression through forms and situations that can range from the everyday to the positively outlandish and creates a total experience utilizing not just the faculty of sight but often of sound, touch, smell and taste as well.
